Socks – – It’s why we transfer

SocksWhen you walk by kennels in a shelter, it is loud and, for the most part, heart-breaking.  Each dog is either wagging their tail, jumping on the door, or cowered in the corner because they’re terrified.  All of them want the same thing – – a home – – a place where they will be loved, fed and have a safe place to sleep.  For me, personally, it is very difficult to walk past cages when I know I can’t take them home.

Socks is an example.  For one year (365 days/nights) he sat in a kennel at a shelter.  Yes, he was fed/watered/exercised.  Yes, he had a safe place to sleep.  But it wasn’t a home – and that’s what he wanted – – – a home!!!!  He got along with other dogs, was full of boundless energy and ready to give and receive love.

The shelter where he lived is one of our transfer partners. On September 19th, he made the long overnight trip to Dumb Friends League in Colorado.  Here’s the really, really good part – in just 2 days he went to his new home!!!  I can only imagine how happy he was.  365 days/nights – and overnight ride – – and, finally, a home!!!

As long as there’s a surplus of adoptable dogs (and cats) in Oklahoma, one of the best solutions is out-of-state transfer to a trusted partner.  Yes – 25+ dogs (and sometimes cats) leave our facility every Tuesday night.  But if you count the animals from all of the other shelters/rescues in Oklahoma that leave on many different travel routes – – there’s easily 100+ every week – – probably more if we could identify all of them.  Many of them are like Socks, homeless/abandoned  – just waiting to find a home.

So here’s to Socks….and all those who, this week, will find themselves in a cage or in the back seat of a car/SUV – headed out-of-state to find their home.  A big thanks!!! to our partners, to Dumb Friends League and to all the rescues/shelters/transporters who help change the life for an Oklahoma pet who found themselves homeless.
