About “Best Friends of Pets”

Mission

The mission of Best Friends of Pets is to end pet overpopulation by helping pets, their owners and our community. The pet overpopulation problem of too many pets and not enough homes in the Oklahoma City area places massive burdens on our community’s animal shelters and costs taxpayers millions of dollars each year.

History

Best Friends was formed in 1994 as Best Friends of the Oklahoma City Animal Welfare Division to help increase pet adoptions and improve conditions for pets at the Oklahoma City Animal Shelter. Through June 2006, Best Friends provided many items and services for pets and shelter staff and helped increase the number of pets adopted annually from under 2,000 in 1994 to more than 4,600 in 2005.

In 2005, we changed our name to Best Friends of Shelter Pets and started SNAP, the first year-round community spay/neuter program of its kind in the Oklahoma City area. In 2008, we shortened our name to Best Friends of Pets.

Programs and Services

Solutions for Pet Problem

SNAP: Best Friends’ SNAP (Spay/Neuter Assistance Program) makes spaying and neutering affordable for pet owners receiving Medicaid, Oklahoma Department of Human Services, and Supplemental Security Income benefits or meeting Medicaid income guidelines. General public assistance is also available. Best Friends works with veterinary and nonprofit spay/neuter clinics throughout the Oklahoma City area to reduce the distances low-income pet owners must travel for our SNAP services.

Pet Adoptions: Best Friends works with our adoption partners, which include small rescue groups and foster homes, to find caring homes for pets through our monthly adoption outreaches and postings on the internet. Best Friends also helps qualifying families who must find homes for their pets or who have found stray pets.

Pet ID Tags: Best Friends provides pet ID tags so pets may be reunited quickly with their families. Local animal shelters hold pets as few as three days. Tagged pets are usually held longer, and animal shelters try to contact the owners using the information on the tags.

Pet Education and Information: Best Friends provides information on responsible pet ownership and on many other pet issues to help pet owners keep pets in their homes. Many pets are surrendered for behavioral reasons that can be easily corrected with some time and effort by the owners.
