In honor of National Mutt Day, adoptable mixed-breed dogs take the spotlight — each one a unique blend of traits, personality and potential.
Variety really is the spice of mutt life.
No single blueprint defines a mixed-breed dog. Each is a combination of traits that makes them entirely their own — steady and affectionate, bright and curious, playful and observant, often all within the same wagging package.
For National Mutt Day, July 31, we’re spotlighting adoptable dogs from local rescues, each waiting for a home where their individuality isn’t something to sort out, but something to celebrate. Sometimes the best companions aren’t defined by one breed at all, but by the unexpected mix that makes them unforgettable.

Princess

Female | 7 years | 46 lbs. | OK Humane Society
Princess is a spayed 7-year-old girl with plenty of spunk and a name that suits her perfectly. She walks well on a leash and has done well with several dogs of different sizes in foster care. Princess enjoys the finer things in life, including her meals served just so and a good selection of toys and bones to choose from. She is crate trained, housebroken and would happily spend most of her days lounging on the couch, watching TV with her people.
Princess will do best in a home where other dogs are not resource guarders and are separated for meals and treats, as she prefers not to share her “royal treasures.” She may also need supervision around counters.
Puddin’

Female | Est. 3 years | Free to Live Animal Sanctuary
Puddin’ is a sweet, affectionate girl who loves cuddling with her humans and soaking up attention. She came in as a stray and has had a rough start, including a recently repaired cherry eye, but she’s healed and ready for her next chapter. Puddin’ will thrive as the only pet in the home and is not suited for situations with other dogs or shared pet spaces. Similarly, apartment living would be tough for this Pittie princess. She’s a loving companion just waiting for her person. Apply online to meet her at freetoliveok.org/adopt.
Layla

Female | Est. 5 years | Free to Live Animal Sanctuary
Layla is a beautiful, smart and playful German Shepherd mix who carries herself like a confident, well-mannered lady. She does well with children and can live with other dogs as long as she’s allowed to take the lead, though she’d also be perfectly content as the only pet. Layla is crate trained, walks well on a leash and has a great balance of youthful energy and maturity. She is ready to find her forever place in the world. Apply online to meet her at freetoliveok.org/adopt.
Lisbeth

Female | Est. 5 years | Free to Live Animal Sanctuary
It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Lisbeth, running faster than you’ve ever seen a dog run in your life. This petite, high-energy girl loves to run, play and stay active, and she’d thrive with a family that can keep up with her adventurous spirit. Found underweight after being dumped, Lisbeth quickly showed her sweet, silly personality once she realized she was safe. She enjoys affection just as much as playtime and could be a great fit for an active home willing to give her plenty of love and enrichment. This sweet little diva would be happy to meet any resident dogs in your home prior to adoption to make sure it’s a love match, and she can be cat tested for any interested parties. Apply online to meet her at freetoliveok.org/adopt.
Little Mac

Male | 2 years | 34 lbs. | OK Humane Society
Little Mac may be low to the ground, but his devotion to his people runs high. Once he trusts you, he becomes a loyal little shadow who’s happiest staying close to his inner circle. He can be cautious with new people and dogs at first, so slow introductions are important. He prefers to take things at his own pace. He’s not recommended for homes with children under 12, cats or other small pets.
In foster care, Mac has made dog friends of all sizes, especially with gradual introductions like parallel walks and gate meetings before face-to-face interaction. He can be protective of his people and food around other dogs but responds well to correction and continues to improve with consistency.
This pint-sized explorer enjoys walks, rides well in the car (with child locks recommended) and is comfortable in a crate or large enclosure when alone.
