What does it truly mean to be brave? This is the question answered in the middle-grade novel “I Am Rebel” by Ross Montgomery. Told from the perspective of a small dog with an enormous heart, “I Am Rebel” delivers a stirring, emotionally rich adventure that explores loyalty, courage and the quiet power of choosing kindness in a divided world.

Rebel lives a simple, contented life on a farm with his beloved owner, Tom. But when war fractures their peaceful valley, and Tom is drawn into the conflict, Rebel refuses to accept being left behind. What follows is a perilous quest across a landscape scarred by suspicion and fear. Along the way, Rebel encounters other animals, some wary, some wounded, all shaped by the growing unrest. Gradually, he begins to understand that “enemy” is often just another word for someone frightened.

What makes “I Am Rebel” particularly powerful is its perspective. By filtering a story of uprising and injustice through the eyes of a dog, Montgomery creates an unexpected but deeply effective narrative lens. Rebel’s voice is earnest and sincere, allowing complex themes of war, prejudice and moral choice to be presented in a way that is accessible without ever feeling simplistic. Rebel’s innocence does not diminish the gravity of events — it sharpens them. His confusion, fear and fierce love highlight the human consequences of power and violence in ways that feel immediate and authentic. Yet the novel remains age-appropriate, anchored by hope and the steadfast belief that compassion can survive even the harshest circumstances.

The pacing strikes a satisfying balance between adventure and reflection. Young readers will be drawn in by narrow escapes and tense encounters, while older children and adults will appreciate the layered emotional depth. Montgomery offers moments that invite reflection rather than easy answers, making the novel ideal for thoughtful classroom discussion.

At its heart, “I Am Rebel” is not just about war but identity. Rebel’s journey is one of self-discovery: learning that being a “rebel” is not about aggression or defiance for its own sake but about standing up for what is right even when it is difficult. His unwavering loyalty becomes a quiet act of resistance.

Beautifully written and deeply humane, “I Am Rebel” is a moving story that lingers long after the final page. It is an excellent choice for middle-grade readers ready to engage with big questions about bravery, empathy and what it means to choose love over fear.
